Henwen - Goddesses of Acappella

Henwen write, arrange and sing big blues, old folk, new country and sizzling swing.

They’ve done it on national TV, on local and national radio, in pubs, clubs, festivals, tents, churches, street corners, town halls and theatres. For five years they’ve done it in the Famous Spiegeltent, as part of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

Because their music is made by the human voice, and because of the importance they give to the lyrics of their songs, Henwen have often performed alongside poets, eg Andrew Motion, Jackie Kay, Linton Kwesi Johnson, Patience Agbabi and Ian Macmillan - the latter has written pieces for them to set to music.

They will dazzle and mesmerise you with their curious modesty and funny name.

‘Daring vocal experiment and relaxed closeness’ - WRPM

‘I can’t think when I last heard anything as beautiful’ - Linton Kwesi Johnson

Henwen are Gillian Edwards, Fay Gillanders, Magda Phillips, Jill Sampson and Rowena Sommerville
