Make a preparatory visit to check out parking, toilets, walk routes and study sites and also to carry out a risk assessment for all activities. Do not rely on information collected on previous visits that may be out of date.
Note that the village is a traffic free zone and that coach parking is available in the main Station Car Park. From here it is about a 20 minute walk down a very steep hill to get to the shore, and of course what goes down has to come back up !
If there is a disabled person in the group, consider booking a taxi to transport then between the car park and the shore, to ensure that they don’t miss out on the experience. Phone numbers for local taxis are available from Tourist Information Centres, see back cover for contact details.
Great care should always be taken on the beach, especially when the tide is coming in. It is essential to find out the times of high and low tide on the day of your visit. Ask in local shops for a tide table or contact the Whitby Harbour Master’s office.
Keep your party to a manageable size. Ensure you have enough leaders and that they are all aware of their roles and responsibilities.
